How are stairlifts powered?

25th February 2025

A common question that many people ask is how stairlifts are powered. In this guide, we will look at how stairlifts work, the technology that keeps stairlifts running, the different power sources used and how they work in the event of a power outage.

Whether you're in the market for a new stairlift or curious about your current one, this guide will provide the technical insights you need to understand your stairlift’s power system.

How is a stairlift powered, and how does it work?

To move up and down, a stairlift needs to move along a track that runs the length of the stairs and is powered by a small motor.

Age Co stairlifts are manufactured by Handicare and powered by two DC stairlift batteries. In addition, the rail will be plugged into the mains to recharge those batteries.

Stairlifts have three main components that enable them to run smoothly:

  • Motor – The motor is generally found within the base of a stairlift. The motor is what gives the unit its movement and is battery-powered.
  • Stairlift Batteries - Used to power the stairlift, the battery, which is also located at the bottom of the stairlift, powers the motor. The batteries used in the stairlifts we provide are high-quality, long-lasting and should not need replacing very often.
  • Gear – This is connected to and powered by the motor, and it is what moves the stairlift. The geared strip is built into the track and is what moves the stairlift up and down.

There are many other features when it comes to a stairlift, such as remote controls, swivel seats, and more. These will depend on the model of your stairlift and your needs.

How do I know if the stairlift battery needs replacing?

You should get your stairlift serviced every year, and during this service, the engineer will check the battery and its voltage using battery testers to ensure that it is charging correctly.

These tests will show if a replacement is necessary and if the battery is not working at full capacity. Stairlift replacement batteries are easy to buy, and our engineers can offer expert advice on the type of batteries you need and how much they cost.

How do you charge a stairlift battery?

While you won't need to check your stairlift's batteries, you should make sure your stairlift is not left too long off its charging point.

To charge a stairlift battery, you need to park it at its correct position, and the rail should be plugged into the mains. The batteries will then recharge correctly. You should not turn off the power at the socket for too long as this will deplete the battery’s life, and it will need to be charged again sooner.

What is the battery life for a stairlift?

The battery life for a stairlift is around two to five years, but this can change depending on how much it is used. The battery life will be reduced if a stairlift is left off its charging point.

How do you replace a stairlift battery?

You should never attempt to replace a stairlift battery yourself, as only fully-trained stairlift engineers can carry this out. If you were to try it yourself, your warranty could be void. Handicare’s engineers will test the new battery and ensure that the old one is disposed of correctly.

The stairlift replacement batteries stocked by Handicare will be tested to ensure they are working properly.

How much is a stairlift battery?

As part of our stairlift warranty, there is no charge for replacing stairlift batteries. You should always order replacement batteries for your stairlift from the manufacturer.

Buying cheaper alternatives that are non-manufacturer-approved batteries can damage your stairlift, affect the performance, and, in extreme cases, could become a fire hazard.

Will a stairlift work during a power cut?

The simple answer is yes. When the stairlift is docked, it charges the batteries, which means there is very little power outage. This allows them to hold power, which can be used in a scenario such as a power cut.
